What are damages awarded in a lawsuit?
When an individual makes a successful civil action claim against another party, any money that he or she is rewarded as a result is known as “damages.” Damages are generally divided into two different classifications: compensatory and punitive.
Compensatory damages, also known to some as actual damages, are rewarded to the injured party in order to compensate him or her for the loss or injury. This sum of money typically may cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost property expenses, and lost wages.
Punitive damages, on the other hand, are awarded as a measure of punishment. They are used to deter the offender from pursuing the same, damaging course of action in the future.
