A Hays County jury sentenced a San Antonio man to 14 years in prison this week for intoxication assault of a Department of Public Safety trooper.
The 38-year-old San Antonio man was convicted of striking a DPS trooper’s car with his pickup truck while the officer was involved in a routine traffic stop. He then fled the scene on foot, but was caught about a half-mile from the location of the incident.
Police sobriety tests revealed the San Antonio man’s blood alcohol content to be significantly over the state legal limit.
In addition to being convicted of intoxication assault, the man was given another five-year prison term for failure to stop and render aid. Because it is a deadly weapon assault, the man must serve at least half his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.
The officer suffered multiple broken bones in his leg as well as a torn ligament but is expected to make a full recovery.
