Trooper patrols increase in Texas for Memorial Day weekend

Posted on May 25th, 2012 No Comments

The Department of Public Safety has decided to increase the number of trooper patrols this weekend throughout the state of Texas in order to protect the public from erratic and irresponsible drivers on the road for the Memorial Day holiday.

The added trooper patrols will be present from Friday, May 25, until Monday, May 28. Their focus will be on drunk drivers, people traveling at excessive speeds, and drivers who are not wearing their seat belts.

Last year, the increase in patrols for Memorial Day weekend resulted in 518 drunk driving arrests, 6,000 citations for speeding, and 1,500 citations for seat belt violations. Police officers are urging Texas drivers to act responsibly over the weekend and proceed with caution on the roadways.

Drunk driving accidents can result in severe injuries. If you have been injured in a car accident due to a drunk driver, please contact the drunk driving lawyers of Chris Mayo Injury Lawyers (210) 999-9999 today.

Cell phone ban urged for drivers across the country

Posted on December 15th, 2011 No Comments

On Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Board released a proposal for a nationwide ban on all cell phone use  while driving.

This proposal came after a tragic car accident in August 2010 in Gray Summit, MO that left two dead and injured 38 others.  The driver of the pickup truck that caused the accident was a 19 year old who sent 11 text messages in 11 minutes before the incident.

According to Chairwoman Deborah A.P. Hersman of the NHTSB, “More than 3,000 people lost their lives last year in distraction-related accidents…no call, no text, no update, is worth a human life.”

San Antonio, in addition to Austin, El Paso, and Arlington, banned texting while driving in October of 2010.  Though the NHTSB cannot actually pass any laws banning cell phone use, this proposal sends a very clear and strong message to legislatures that are responsible for changing such laws.

According to officials with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers received a phone call shortly after 5:30 a.m. from someone who reported seeing a wrong-way driver on Loop 1604. When deputies arrived on the scene, they observed the crash site on 1604, just south of Highway 90.

According to Sergeant Aaron Vonmuldau, it appeared the wrong-way driver was heading north in the southbound lane when he collided head-on with a southbound vehicle. Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles with the Jaws of Life, Vonmuldau said.

The two victims were transported by ambulance to University Hospital in stable condition.

A San Antonio Police Officer was seriously injured by an alleged drunk driver Sunday.

According to officials with the San Antonio Police Department, officer Michael Thornton was struck by a vehicle driven by 24 year-old Kevin Balditt Sunday night on Interstate 35. Thornton had stopped on the Interstate to assist a stranded motorist when Balditt strayed onto the shoulder and struck the officer.

The two motorists Thornton had been helping pulled the officer to safety and called an ambulance. He was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment.
