7 San Antonio police officers being investigated

Posted on February 8th, 2012 No Comments

Seven South Texas police officers, whose names were not revealed, have been put under investigation for allegedly covering up a car accident of an off-duty sergeant.

None of the officers are facing charges, and according to San Antonio police Chief William McManus, the sergeant driving involved in the accident was put on administrative leave after he hit a highway wall in his patrol car on Thursday.  Alcohol is believed to be involved.

The other officers are now on administrative duty after they attempted to cover up potential evidence from the officers’ vehicle.

There was minor damage to the patrol car and an officer who was not involved in the cover up reported it.

According to officials with the San Antonio Police Department, the accident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 10, just before La Cantera Parkway. Investigators say a man driving a pickup truck in the westbound lanes of the interstate lost control of his vehicle, struck a retaining guide-wire in the median and collided with a metal utility pole.

The driver was pinned in his vehicles and San Antonio Fire Department personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

The cause of the auto accident remains under investigation by the San Antonio Police Department. The victim’s name has not been released, pending notification of the family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
