NHTSA set to take action to increase safety features in cars

Posted on November 22nd, 2013 No Comments

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), it is looking to determine how to get car manufacturers to offer more innovative and safe car features by the end of 2013. The agency has said that some of the features it is looking at, such as collision avoidance, seat belt locks, and alcohol detection systems, could reduce traffic fatalities by a big margin.

Data from the agency showed that traffic deaths significantly increased from 2005, with 2012’s records showing 33,561 deaths, a 1,082 increase of traffic deaths from a year ago.

NHTSA head David Strickland told reporters in a conference call that some Americans are still driving drunk, driving distractedly, or driving without putting their seat belts on, and such devices could make the difference between a fatality and a saved life.

Strickland said preliminary records indicate that traffic accident deaths are declining this year.

Senate strengthens punishment for fleeing an accident

Posted on April 2nd, 2013 No Comments

A measure to strengthen punishment for leaving the scene of an accident that caused injury was unanimously passed in the Texas Senate today.

Under Senate Bill 275, introduced by Austin Democratic Sen. Kirk Watson, fleeing the accident scene is now considered a second degree felony, which is the same as intoxication manslaughter. According to Watson, some drunk drivers involved in accidents flee to avoid tougher punishments. Before the bill was passed, fleeing the scene of the accident was only a third degree felony.

If the bill passes the House for consideration, fleeing an accident that caused an injury could result in up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

Being involved in a hit and run accident can cause serious physical injuries and losses to innocent people. Call (210) 999-9999 if you’ve been injured in such an accident and believe you may be owed financial compensation. Our lawyers at the Chris Mayo Law Firm may be able to help you.
