In a report released on Friday, September 13, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) showed that around 36,000 workers were wrongfully given disability payments by the Social Security Administration from December 2010 to January 2013. This resulted in an estimated $1.3 billion in improper disability payments.
Less than 1 percent of the beneficiaries and disability payments were affected by the supposed error, but GAO officials are saying this puts a dent on the SSA’s policing system. The SSA said it is 99% accurate when it comes to making disability payment but admitted even the slightest margin of error can translate to big amounts.
SSA records show that 8.2 million disabled workers received disability payments in December 2010, with the number recently growing to 9 million. In 2011, it released $137 billion in disability payments.
