Depletion of Social Security disability benefits not a priority for lawmakers

Posted on August 30th, 2013 No Comments

The director of tax policy studies at libertarian think tank the Cato Institute, Chris Edwards, said congressmen and senators weren’t keen on crafting legislation that would save the Social Security disability benefits from being depleted in 2016, saying he “hasn’t heard of any member on the Hill sort of championing disability insurance reform.”

He made the statement on Tuesday, August 20 during a briefing on Social Security disability benefits’ rising costs, which will amount to $200 billion this year.

Experts at the Cato Institute said eligibility for disability benefits has grown immensely as requirements have decreased over the years. Another factor is the increase in eligibility characteristics, such as mental conditions and “nonexertional restrictions” which rose 323 percent since 1984, when the category was introduced.

Budget analyst Ted DeHaven said the percentage of children enrolled in disability has also increased to 16 percent from 4 percent in 1980.
