A local woman suffered a serious spinal cord injury last week after being hit by a truck while riding her bike on the access road to I-10 West.
Monica Caban, a 39-year-old triathlete, was training for her second Ironman triathlon, when a truck hit her from behind. Caban’s training partner says the truck’s impact sent her at soaring at least 30 feet through the air before she landed. She was relieved Caban survived such a drastic accident. Cagan has already had surgery and doctors say her recovery is up to her at this point.
The accident has sparked a strong reaction from the San Antonio’s close-knit cyclist community, even among those who have never met Caban. Many are calling for motorists to respect cyclist safety and rights, asking them to remember that cyclists are human beings rather than moving obstacles. The community has been providing meals for Caban while she recovers and has already raised $15,000 to help alleviate the burden of her medical costs.
Roadways can be incredibly dangerous for cyclists. Since they do not enjoy the protection afforded to drivers by their vehicles, even seemingly minor accidents can cause severe injuries. If you have been hurt on your bicycle by a negligent driver, a personal injury lawyer can help you seek compensation for your injuries from the party responsible for your pain and suffering.
