A new ordinance in Seguin that bans texting or using cell phone applications while driving went into effect on Saturday with the start of the new year.
The ban applies to using any software application on the phone as well, including using a GPS system or the internet. The law also applies when stopped at a red light or stop sign. Talking on the phone while driving is still legal, but is not permitted in school zones. People who ignore the new law could face fines of up to $500.
Police say that the law was created to increase safety and to reduce accidents and injuries. Texting while driving has already been banned in San Antonio and many of its other surrounding areas.
