Chain reaction truck accident on South Side

An accident on the South Side occurred around 11:30AM on Thursday on South Presa, just north of Military Drive.

News 4 WOAI reported that the accident started when a cement truck traveling nouth on South Presa stopped to turn at Old Corpus Christi Highway and an 18-wheeler behind the cement truck began jerking due to an engine problem.  Another 18-wheeler traveling south on South Presa then collided with the other 18-wheeler head on, causing it to run off the road and into a ditch.

The driver of the second 18-wheeler suffered back and knee injuries.

Man Dead in Car vs. Pedestrian Accident

22-year-old Victor Garza was hit by an SUV as he was walking down the interstate center near Boerne. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. 65-year-old Michael Gilbert drove the Ford Excursion that hit Garza. He and his passenger, 55-year-old Jose Cisneros, were both taken to the hospital and were released after treatment.

According to the Boerne Star, “At the same time deputies were dispatched to the scene of the rollover accident, they were alerted that a man wearing dark clothing had been seen walking in the middle of the highway in that area, Chief Deputy Matt King said.” Gilbert told officers he swerved to avoid hitting Garza and flipped his SUV. The Department of Public Safety Report indicated that, “the driver had taken evasive action,” according to the Boerne Star.

One Dead, Several Injured in Wrong Way Crash

Authorities report that a 22-year-old member of the United States Army was driving the wrong way on Highway 90 last night near South Zarzamora. Several vehicles were able to dodge the wrong-way vehicle. KENS5 reports, “However, he reportedly smashed into a Dodge Nitro sports utility vehicle.” That vehicle carried 38-year-old Juan Urrutia. He was killed on the scene. The driver of the Dodge was injured as well.

Police report that the Army man also hit another vehicle. It’s passengers were taken to the hospital with injuries.

According to KENS5, “the soldier was taken to University Hospital to undergo a mandatory blood draw. It’s required in death or injury accidents where alcohol is suspected.” The suspect is expected to be charged with intoxication manslaughter and assault.

SpaghettiOs, Marie Callender's Frozen Dinners Recalled

The United States Department of Agriculture announced a recall of both Campbell’s SpaghettiOs and ConAgra’s Marie Callender’s frozen meals.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the Marie Callender’s meals have been linked to cases of salmonella in 14 states. The LA Times writes that, “Twenty-nine people have fallen ill; eight of them reportedly ate the meals in April or May.” All Marie Callender’s meals with the title, “‘Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken and Rice White Meat Chicken and Broccoli over Rice Topped with Rich Cheddar Sauce,'” are being recalled.

As the LA Times points out, this is not the first major recall for ConAgra. It was the company that manufactured Peter Pan Peanut Butter.

Campbell’s has also announced a recall of their SpaghettiOs with Meatballs. According to the Times, “after a cooker failed to work properly at one of the company’s Paris, Texas, processing plants. As a result, some of the beef and noodles may have been undercooked, the company said.” The recalled cans are marked “EST4K” and expire between June 2010 and December 2011. No illnesses have been reported so far.
