San Antonio man receives prison time for drunk driving accident

Posted on April 29th, 2010 No Comments

A Hays County jury sentenced a San Antonio man to 14 years in prison this week for intoxication assault of a Department of Public Safety trooper.

The 38-year-old San Antonio man was convicted of striking a DPS trooper’s car with his pickup truck while the officer was involved in a routine traffic stop. He then fled the scene on foot, but was caught about a half-mile from the location of the incident.

Police sobriety tests revealed the San Antonio man’s blood alcohol content to be significantly over the state legal limit.

In addition to being convicted of intoxication assault, the man was given another five-year prison term for failure to stop and render aid. Because it is a deadly weapon assault, the man must serve at least half his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.

The officer suffered multiple broken bones in his leg as well as a torn ligament but is expected to make a full recovery.

Drunk driver responsible for death of passenger

Police have determined that the driver in a single-vehicle crash on Thursday was driving under the influence. The accident occurred North of downtown around 1:45 a.m. The 23-year-old woman passenger was thrown through the windshield when the vehicle, driven by a local 36-year-old, spun out of control and hit a utility pole on San Pedro Avenue.

The driver is hospitalized and recovering from serious injuries but has still been charged with intoxicated manslaughter. In a twist of irony, the crash happened later on the day that Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in conjunction with the San Antonio police department, began a large-scale campaign against drunk Fiesta drivers getting behind the wheel.

Police believe the driver’s vehicle was a white pickup truck. The truck sideswiped a BMW,  resulting in both breaking through wire barriers in the highway median. The truck then collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

The injured persons are believed to be 2 children and 4 adults, one of whom was 8 months pregnant.
